Care & installation

Installation and maintenance of 1960s-era wallcoverings demand precision and respect for material integrity. This guide outlines procedures to ensure durability and visual fidelity over time, adhering to principles of stability, compatibility, and controlled environmental interaction.

Substrate Preparation

Surface readiness is nonnegotiable. Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or residual adhesives. Use a mild alkaline cleaner if necessary, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. The surface must be smooth and flat, with no cracks or protrusions exceeding 1.5mm. Apply a primer if the substrate is porous or uncoated, selecting a product compatible with the wallcovering’s material. Allow the primer to cure fully before proceeding.

Paste Application

Select a paste type that matches the wallcovering’s specifications. For most 1960s-era materials, a wheat-based or synthetic adhesive with medium viscosity is appropriate. Avoid over-saturation; apply paste in even, controlled strokes to prevent pooling. Use a trowel with a notched profile to ensure uniform coverage. Allow the paste to activate for 2–3 minutes before positioning the wallcovering to avoid premature adhesion.

Seam Alignment

Seams require meticulous attention. Align edges precisely, using a straightedge or
